Dr Hegde,  a cardiologist, professor of medicine, author, former Vice Chancellor of Manipal Academy of Higher Education, Co-Chairman of the TAG-VHS Diabetes Research Centre, Chennai and the chairman of Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Mangalore and who was awarded the Dr. B. C. Roy Award in 1999. He was awarded India's third highest civilian award the Padma Bhushan in 2010. He was awarded India's second highest civilian award the Padma Vibhushan in 2021
