PUMP - பாம்பு - ETYMOLOGY
Etymology of the Engish word "Pump".
Pump means "apparatus for forcing liquid or air," used since early 15c., of uncertain origin. possibly from Middle Dutch pompe "water conduit, pipe," or Middle Low German pumpe "pump" (Modern German Pumpe), both from some North Sea sailors' word, possibly of imitative origin.
TAMIL CONNECTION
We have a Tamil word called 'pumbu' (pronounced as 'pam'bu') meaning 'to raise'. The word 'pumbade' (pronounced 'pam'bade' - usually in an argument) in Tamil, means "do not rise" (say one's voice).
Note: the word in Tamil "Paambu" for snake came from this root word only as it has the habit of rising its hood to see things around itself.
This word 'pambu' could have become 'pump' in English.
